The Royal College of Physicians may be considered the founder of the infirmary. In 1725 they commenced to receive subscriptions, themselves heading the list. After £2,000 was subscribed the contributors were called together and organized. It was opened in a small hired house on the 6th of August, 1729. Chartered by George II, August 25, 1736. The corner-stone of the new building was laid August 2, 1738, and patients were admitted in Dec., 1741. The surgeon apothecaries attended without fee, and furnished medicine gratis from 1729 to 1748. Among the most prominent of its early friends were George Drummond, lord provost of Edinburgh, and Dr. Alexander Monro primus, by their labors and exertions as the original building committee. The new infirmary was occupied Oct. 29, 1879.
