The hospital was founded in 1123 by Rayhere, minstrel of Henry I. As early as 1662 students were admitted to attend the medical and surgical practice at the hospital, and in 1667 a library was established for the use of the governors and university scholars. In 1724 a new building was provided for a museum of anatomical and chirurgical preparations, under the charge of John Freke. In 1734 leave was granted to read lectures on anatomy in the dissecting room. In 1822 a large anatomical theatre was built, and enlarged in 1835 and again in 1854. In 1843 the governors founded a college to afford the pupils a residence within the walls of the hospital.
