Item Type Search in Advanced Search

Each record in IndexCat was assigned a record type when it was converted from the printed Index Catalogue. These item types may provide you with some limits for searching.

Items types available are:

1. Use the Codes to search: Mon for monographs, Diss for dissertations, and Jour for journal title. Analytic and Portrait are not abbreviated. Use the term as the code.

2. Always search Item Type in combination with another search category or term.

• The total number of items in some types are too large to return any results. For example, if you search the 'Diss' code by itself, the system goes into a searching loop. You must exit IndexCat and restart your session.
• The exception is 'portrait'.
• Portrait item is designated as a separate category in Series 1 and 2.
• Other series use 'port' or 'portrait' in the Notes area. Use Keyword Anywhere to search in all series.

3. An ANALYTIC item search may not be successful even if combined with another search strategy category.

4. Combination results for Monograph (Mon) and Dissertation (Diss) searches vary depending upon the retrieval size of the other terms used with these item types.

Example: In Series 2, a Keyword Anywhere Advanced Search using the term 'anthrax' and Item Type code 'Diss' for dissertation provides 89 results.
